Calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate

Your BMR -- calories per day

What is BMR?

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body needs to perform basic life-sustaining functions like breathing, circulation, cell production, and nutrient processing. It accounts for approximately 60-75% of your daily calorie expenditure. Knowing your BMR helps you plan your diet and exercise regimen more effectively.

How BMR is Calculated

We use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is considered the most accurate formula for calculating BMR. For men: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) - 5 × age(y) + 5. For women: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) - 5 × age(y) - 161.

Using Your BMR

To estimate your total daily calorie needs, multiply your BMR by an activity factor: Sedentary (1.2), Lightly active (1.375), Moderately active (1.55), Very active (1.725), or Extra active (1.9). This gives you the calories needed to maintain your current weight.
